Ceramic Plant Bowled Over by Capability of FANUC Robots

When a factory installs its first FANUC robot, such are the benefits available that other robots typically soon follow. Among those providing testimony to this fact is leading ceramic manufacturer Apulum. Following the installation of its first FANUC robot in 2014, several more have since taken up their place in the company’s finishing process. Apulum is now looking to enhance its packaging operations with FANUC robots.

Key Insights from Task to Result

Task

Driven by an ethos of continuous improvement, a major manufacturer of ceramic tableware - including bowls, plates, dishes and saucers - wanted to take its finishing process to the next level by introducing automation. However, supplying blue-chip retail brands with up to 50 million ceramic pieces a year from over 2000 different product types meant Apulum would have to specify an automation supplier with both high-performance robots and correspondingly excellent service capabilities.

Solution

In keeping with its market-leading position of providing products to major retailers such as IKEA and Villeroy & Boch, Apulum installed its first FANUC robot in 2014.

Result

Apulum today uses a selection of FANUC robots across its fast-paced yet high-quality finishing process, including M-10đť‘–A/12 models. With such high output demands, the company relies heavily on the service and support of FANUC to help maximise robot uptime and productivity rates.

Apulum introduced its first FANUC robot in 2014. Today, a number of FANUC robots, including M-10𝑖A/12 models, serve in the company’s product finishing process. With its 12 kg payload and 1420 mm reach, the M-10𝑖A/12 provides high-speed, vibration-free product handling, helping to boost both productivity and quality.

“In the future we want to introduce robots in our packaging area, which will drive further improvements in our operations,” says Dorogan. “We believe that we still have a lot to learn, especially in the field of work programme optimisation for robots.”

Uptime and productivity are of paramount importance at this incredibly busy ceramics plant. Here, the company leverages the capabilities of FANUC’s technical support to help identify and resolve defects.

“The repair and parts replacements service provided by FANUC is of a high and professional standard,” reports Dorogan.
