Trafime Leads the Field with its FANUC IIoT Platform

With business evolution and growth, many manufacturers find themselves running a disparate assortment of machinery, automation and other production systems, often supplied by many different vendors. This situation makes some production plants think that effective data management using a single IIoT platform is not possible. Well, FANUC’s FIELD system proves this thinking is misplaced, as Italy-based Trafime can confirm.
TRAFIME is an important Italian company active with three plants and exporting 80% of its production. After having adopted FANUC technology for ROBODRILL and robots, TRAFIME decided to install FANUC FIELD System to monitor their production and increase machine availability. Discover their experience with the FANUC original IIoT platform and all the advantages of an on premise solution.

Key Insights from Task to Result

Task

With a myriad of machines, robots and other systems across three busy production sites in different Italian cities, automotive component supplier Trafime wanted to identify and implement an IIoT platform that could deliver effective and concise data management.

Solution

Based on its satisfaction of investing in FANUC machine tools and robots, Trafime turned to the FANUC FIELD system, an increasingly popular, feature-rich, on-premise IIoT system.

Result

With FIELD system, Trafime has connected many production machines of different generations from a wide range of manufacturers, enabling comprehensive data analysis along the entire process chain. Aside from better data management both locally and in the cloud, the company cites other major benefits as universality of use, a reduction in management costs and enhanced cybersecurity.

Headquartered in Sicily, Trafime has a trio of production plants across Italy from where the company manufactures high-tech products, some 80% for the automotive industry. Indeed, exports to Europe and the rest of the world also account for 80% of production. Established in 1967 as a specialist in fine blanking, Trafime today commands a turnover of around €60 million.

Trafime Makes a Connection with FANUC

“Evolution in business is necessary and vital, which is why some years ago we decided to introduce NC into our production cycles,” explains Luca Coffa, CEO of Italy-based automotive component manufacturer Trafime.

Today, Trafime has a broad spread of FANUC automation solutions in action at its manufacturing plants, including high-performance ROBODRILL machining centres and a variety of six-axis industrial robots, such as LR Mate 200𝑖D and M-10𝑖A models. Some robots are mounted on a seventh axis, a linear track, to tend machines situated in front and behind.

With so many machines, robots and other systems on site at the company’s three highly automated production facilities, Trafime wanted a high-capability, shop-floor IIoT platform to manage its data effectively. After assessing the market, the company selected the FIELD (FANUC Intelligent Edge Link & Drive) system.

“There were three reasons for our choice,” explains Trafime’s Production Manager Daniele Diliberto. “Firstly for data management: thanks to FIELD system we can manage our data both locally and in the cloud. Managing data locally gives us the advantage of accessing and processing information quicker. We benefit from the option of using the cloud because we have three plants in different cities, so we can amend data more efficiently.”

According to Diliberto, the second reason is universality of use. FIELD system enables the company to run any application. This capability is a huge advantage because it allows Trafime, which uses many different machines and suppliers, to have a single shared platform.

“Thirdly, the single-platform structure of FIELD system enables us to reduce management costs and migrate data securely,” he reveals.

A practical application of FIELD system at Trafime is the use of the FANUC ZDT [Zero Down Time] app and its associated PMA app.

“These apps enable us to carry out predictive maintenance and monitor the health status of our robots,” says Diliberto. “For instance, we recently received a message indicating the deteriorating condition of a particular robot axis. We were able to program a reduction in operating time, allowing intervention and a return of the robot to operations without affecting productivity.”

A final point of note concerns cybersecurity. In a highly competitive market such as automotive, which sees regular evolutions in technology, maintaining data confidentiality and business expertise is critical.

“This is yet another reason we chose FIELD system, as it enables us to manage our data locally without exporting it and exposing it to cyberattacks,” says Diliberto.
