FANUC Cobot Brings Flexibility to Vertical Lathe Operations

Famar, an Italian builder of vertical lathes, has integrated a bin picking system enabled by a FANUC collaborative robot (cobot) into its recently developed Ciao 6 machine. The system facilitates the recognition, picking and handling of parts from tote bins to and from the machine’s conveyor, making the application flexible and adaptable to different components.

Key Insights from Task to Result

Task

Although vertical turning is a mature process, progressive builders of these machines are constantly looking for ways to advance the technology. Italian vertical lathe manufacturer Famar, for example, wanted to introduce more flexibility via a specially developed automation system for its new Ciao 6 vertical lathe. The success of this idea hinged on the design of a special bin picking solution featuring a collaborative robot (cobot). As a user of FANUC CNC systems for over 25 years, Famar turned to the global automation specialist for advice.

Solution

FANUC recommended its CRX-10𝑖A cobot. Weighing just 39 kg, the agility of the CRX-10𝑖A means it can perform a highly functional under-flip motion to pick a part from a front-located tote bin and place it on a conveyor positioned behind in one single, smooth motion. As a further point of note, Famar also fits the FANUC 0𝑖-TF CNC system to its new Ciao 6 vertical lathe.

Result

By adopting the FANUC CRX-10𝑖A cobot, Famar has successfully introduced flexible automation to the process of vertical turning. In addition, the FANUC 0𝑖-TF CNC for lathes offers proven reliability and a competitive price-to-performance ratio. Arguably most of important of all, FANUC provides Famar (which exports 80% of its machines) with reliable service and support around the world, even in countries where Famar is not present.

About Famar

FAMAR success story

Famar builds vertical lathes for the automotive industry, as well as complementary sectors such as truck, tractor and earthmoving machinery. Founded in 1973, the company’s 27,000 m² technologically advanced production facility sits on the slopes of Mount Pirchiriano, in the shadow of the imposing Sacra di San Michele near Turin, Italy. In total, Famar has built more than 6000 machines for customers all over the world. The circa 210-employee company generates annual turnover in the region of €70 million.

FANUC Helps Famar Add a New Dimension to Vertical Lathes

Fausto Marinello is the CEO of Famar Srl, a company with a long and successful history of building vertical lathes for the automotive sector. For its latest machine, Famar wanted to inject a new spin on vertical lathe operations by introducing flexible automation to the process.

To bring this concept to fruition, the company set about developing a special bin picking system for the Ciao 6, which can turn parts up to 260 mm in diameter. At the heart of the bin picking system, Famar selected a FANUC CRX-10đť‘–A collaborative robot (cobot), providing a real innovation in the world of vertical turning.

The Ciao 6 combines high performance, automation and stability in a single solution. It offers end users the optimal Famar balance of productivity and flexibility, which is becoming increasingly important in the automotive sector. The adoption of a FANUC cobot also provides market differentiation, allowing machine operators to work alongside the CRX-10𝑖A without guards or barriers.

Famar selected the FANUC cobot because of its ease of programming. The CRX-10𝑖A recognises, picks and transports components between a tote bin and the machine’s conveyor, making the application adaptable to different parts.

The new machine’s association with FANUC technology does not end with the CRX-10𝑖A, as company CEO Fausto Marinello explains: “Our modern and flexible Ciao 6 evolved from previous models. The machine now has a FANUC CNC to support this flexible, fast and lean vertical lathe. The CNC provides customer satisfaction regarding reliability, productivity and precision.”

Mauro Martin, Technical Director at Famar, adds: “We have been using FANUC CNCs for over 25 years. For the Ciao 6 we opted for the FANUC 0𝑖-TF, a standard CNC for lathes which offers a really good price-to-performance ratio. Moreover, FANUC has an open system that allows us to customise the human-machine interface [HMI].”

Global support is a further aspect of the FANUC offer which Famar and its customers greatly appreciate. The company exports around 80% of its machines.

“The technology demonstrates excellent reliability, but in the rare event of a breakdown, FANUC guarantees us a global service,” explains Martin. “Having that security of FANUC assistance, particularly in countries where we are not present, is very beneficial.”
